Pap Smear

What is a Pap Smear?

A pap smear is a pap test to look for cervical cancer in women. This test involves collecting cells from the cervix, the lower end of the uterus. Along with looking for cervical cancer it can also detect whether you may be at risk for this cancer in the future.

When Should I Get A Pap Smear?

Most doctors recommend women getting a pap smear at the age of 21, as pap smears can also be combined with an HPV test- a sexually transmitted disease in women that can develop into cervical cancer. It is also recommended to get tested every three years for women ages 21-65. More frequent pap smears can be given to women who:

  • Smoke often

  • Have an HIV infection

  • A weak immune system

  • History of cervical cancer

What Happens During A Pap Smear?

A pap smear is often done in a doctors office where you will be lying down on a table undressed from the waist down, then your doctor will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina; the speculum helps keeps the vaginal walls separated as your doctor will go in with a soft brush to collect your cervix cells. You may feel a little bit of pressure in your pelvic area but this process should be painless.

Results:

If you have no problems found at all you're test will come back negative, however if cancerous cells are found, your pap smear test will come back positive.
