Alzheimer’s is a brain disease that causes cognitive dysfunction in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of Dementia it affects approximately 5.8 million people in the United States age 65 and older. Forgetting is associated with aging however if memory loss impedes their daily life it is important to seek medical attention.


Risk Factors:

  • History and Genetics

  • Lifestyle and Heart health

  • Poor Sleep Patterns

  • Head Trauma

Visual Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease:

  • Forgetting recently learned information

  • Forgetting important dates, events or repeating questions

  • Memory loss that interrupts daily activities

  • Challenging in planning or solving problems

  • Unable to complete daily tasks

  • Confusion with time or place

  • Trouble with visual images and/ or spatial relationships

  • Trouble speaking or writing

  • Misplacing things and unable to retrace steps

  • Decreased or poor judgment

  • Changes in mood and personality

  • Wandering or getting lost

Diagnosis:

If you suspect you have Alzheimer’s Disease, you should visit your primary care physician for a physical examination. The doctor will recommend one or more several tests.


Treatment:

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. As a result, most treatments focus on slowing down progression. Treatments can help patients maximize function for a short amount of time.
