What is Influenza?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Influenza is known as routinely causing seasonal outbreaks and mild respiratory infections. It can cause mild to severe symptoms and can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot every year!

What causes the Flu?

The virus enters your body by coming in contact with someone who has the flu or by touching a contaminated item and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Symptoms:

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills

  • Sore throat

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Muscle or body aches

  • Fatigue (tiredness)

  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults

The flu can resemble the common cold but may trigger worsening symptoms. If you think you’ve contracted influenza, schedule a visit with your doctor to discuss treatment.

Treatment and Prevention:

Influenza symptoms can clear on their own with ample rest and fluid intake. In other cases, your doctor may prescribe antiviral medication to help fight the infection.

  • Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze

  • Washing your hands frequently

  • Avoiding large crowds, specifically during a flu outbreak
