What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes. A stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is

crucial. Early action can reduce brain damage and other complications.

There Are Two Types of Strokes:

  • Ischemic strokes: this is the most common type of stroke where the blood vessels become narrow which lead to reduced blood flow to the brain or a complete blockage

  • Hemorrhagic strokes: these types of strokes happen when blood vessels in the brain rupture or leak; factors to this type of stroke include trauma, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and stroke that leads to hemorrhaging.

What Causes a Stroke?

Causes of strokes are either blockage/narrowing of the blood vessels in the brain or a rupture of blood vessels in the brain. This can come from high blood pressure or trauma/injury of the brain and heart disease.
